The Hollies were going for that sound in that song. They really admired them at that time. As did the whole world.

I wouldn't even consider No Rain to be a prototype of the Blind Melon sound. I know it's their big hit, but the rest of the album is so drastically different. I suppose it would be a good example of what the OP was talking about, but not necessarily that No Rain was the best song on the record with a bunch of filler material around it.
