Bad Brains: Most underrated band ever? Anyone a fan?

Probably mostly their own fault. Inability to maintain a consistent lineup, disagreements on which direction to take their music, many releases were poorly produced and/or had just plain bad recording quality even for the era/genre.
Moreover, though, I think many people just didn't understand them, especially Rock For Light and all succeeding albums.

Their later stuff is much more metal, jazz, and reggae influenced.
I Against I sums up Bad Brains for me.

I like them. Dr. Know is a fantastic guitarist.

I don't really think they are underrated. They are rightly seen as one of the pre-eminent hardcore bands of the 80s. They also are rightly held at a bit of arm's length due to HR being a raging a-hole who has successfully alienated all of the his former bandmates and most of his fans and friends.
Banned in DC is still one of the greatest records I own.

I probably mean under appreciated rather than underrated.

Hardcore is always going to be niche. It's a musical genre that really only existed for less than a decade, and it was designed to be as atonal and uncommercial as humanly possible. Hardcore will always have more appreciators than fans, if that makes sense. It's easier to namecheck Bad Brains than actually listen to their albums. I happen to love them, but I'm not surprised hardcore isn't more popular.

I wouldn't pigeon hole them as a hardcore band at all. They've always been heavy but more of their albums were metal and reggae influenced than hardcore. I get your point but I'm mostly talking about people who are into heavier music in the first place. I just don't think their musicianship and creativity have ever been fully appreciated.

Big fan, own everything of theirs up to God Of Love. But nothing beats their first self-titled cassette. Back when I was surfing it was the ultimate hype music for the paddle out.

Didnt that test tube head guy from the cars produce their records? I always thought that was odd chemistry. but hey guess it worked

He produced and mixed the CD re-release of Rock For Light and many say he straight up ruined it. The vinyl version is 100x better (its posted in YouTube if you're interested). Better sound quality, way less tinny. And its mixed differently and slowed down. Its like a totally different album
