Gnr was a perfect storm of the time but any member of that band could've been replaced and it still would've been great. Any member with the exception of izzy because in the end what made Gnr great was their exceptional songs and when izzy left so did those songs and he proved to everyone just how much he brought to that band.
I would say the opposite is true. Slash, Izzy and Axl all were absolutely vital to the band, and removing any of the trio would be and was fatal. GNR was a perfect storm because its core members balanced out each others strengths and weaknesses almost perfectly.

If axl was so great why didn't chinese democracy take off like it should have?
Could ask the same about Izzy. Hell, why didn't Velvet Revolver rival any of the classic GNR releases? Fact is, none of the guys from GNR have done anything special since the split.

Axl provided a great voice, make no mistake about it I hate that man with a passion but he was blessed with one hell of a rock n roll voice.
Slash brough forth the attitude that GnR stove to bring to life (while simultaneously being the most overrated guitarist in the history of rock n roll)
but Izzy brought the SONGS without those great songs you're looking at just another gimmick band from the strip. A band with a great voice and a rock star attitude that never became more than a local act. Those great songs by Izzy is what slingshotted them into stardom and ironically enough drove Izzy out of the band.
ETA: and I agree that without all three you would've never had the animal that was Guns N Roses but Izzy is the only I see with the talent that would have brought him to greatness regardless.

Dude, he was massively important, but he did not write ALL of the songs ALL by himself. The only song on Appetite he is listed as the only writer is Think About You. The rest he collaborated with either Axl or Slash. All 3 were important, the band is not the same with out ANY of them.
