Avenged Sevenfold thoughts?

I've always been a very casual fan - knew 4-5 songs, but REALLY loved those. I think Bat Country has always been my favorite.
In the past month, I've started to do a very intentional, full listen, starting with song 1, album 1. I'm only up to Nightmare at this point.
It's crazy to me how in some ways they were as down the middle of the fairway with metal tropes as possible...and yet it still feels nearly entirely fresh to me.
The production and musicianship seems great. I think sometimes the songwriting can be a LITTLE generic (almost like they aren't even songs, but just riffs on themes?) - like, the 1st album doesn't seem like it has much "catchy" on it, but I still like it.
Right now I'm listening to Danger Line (off of Nightmare) and it is utterly spectacular.
I also listened ahead on the track "Dear God" - and I was blown away by that too. Pedal steel! I think they've taken a lot of criticism over the years for not putting out the same album over and over, but I think, on balance, I really salute the risks they've taken.
One thing I know - when they get it right, they fricking get it right!
Interested in everyone's thoughts...

Pantera wannabes who I really can't stand

Very talented musician’s who have put out a lot of good songs but have never been able to put together a complete album that will be their Back in Black or Reign in Blood. I give them credit for trying new things but i’m just not sure about the new song. I wish I could have seen them in their heyday with the Rev on drums. They get some hate within the metal community that I’m not sure is that warranted.

Best part of his night is when they cover "Walk".

They stand out amongst the other metalcore bands they grew up with as experimenting the most with their sound
City of Evil is my favorite and their biggest hit, Bat Country, is my least favorite song from that album.
Loved how they went in a different direction with the stage that really showed the new drummer Wackerman's style and chops. Miss the Rev, though, his fills were epic and his vocals were a nice change of pace.
Avenged get way too much hate because they "sold out" and "don't scream anymore" but whatever, they're talented guys that mostly make great music.
Not sure about the new song, however...

I saw them open for Metallica in 2017, and M Shadows did not look at all like Phil.
And clearly the other guys don't either...

It's just an example
Never liked them..and they're one of "those bands" from a time period in music I almost hate as much as the current.
I hate a lot of shite in music though..

Check out this video and see how Pantera-inspired they are - I didn't even hear it until I watched this

They get hate because they are one of the biggest metal bands in the modern era. I just don’t understand when people say they “sold out” when they dropped city of evil (arguably their most progressive, wild, long winded album).
They dont write music for anyone but themselves which means taking lots of risks and experimenting.
The stage is a masterpiece. Brooks wackerman was a great addition. I have a feeling this new single is going to sound better within the context of the concept album.
Syn gates is up there with the greats imo.

The music itself really sounds nothing like Pantera - or at least not what I've heard.
I think I listened to Danger Line literally 25 times tonight.

True, but you can’t stand anyone Clint…kidding, we’ve had this convo before.
ETA: I LIKE a7x a lot. I guess I'm just into beta rock...I also love Pantera. I cannot, for the life of me, see how they are trying to be Pantera. I mean, have you heard their new song? It's trash, but I want you to imagine Phil singing it. Please. City Of Evil is one of the most creative rock/metal albums over the last 20 years, and the singers voice is very unique. Not for everybody, but they're a good band.

A handful of good songs but most try and get way to cute.
They also do a good cover of walk.

I thought their early stuff was great. New stuff has become a little commercialized and polished but I won't turn them off if they come across the playlist. They're one of the closest sounds to Pantera but there's only one Pantera.

The singing is different. The soloing is different. The songwriting style is nearly entirely different. Yes, the image is different too. What are yall seeing/hearing that I am not?

Completely agree...A7X wants to be Pantera? Wait, what? Other than covering Walk, they don't even try to sound like Pantera.

Oh don't get me wrong i'd take Pantera 8 days a week but in today's metal scene, I'll take anything with any groove whatsoever as opposed to guttural nonsense over machine drums and speed riffs with no rhythm
