Hey Marco, I should be getting in some new toys next week. I just went through a year of looking for new speakers and paired it down to the top 2:

Focal Sopra 3

B&W 802 D3

I was fortunate enough to have a month long in home audition process with each pair (2 weeks each). It was an agonizing decision, but I ended up going with the 802 D3's. I will post unboxing pics and my thoughts on both and why I went with the B&W's next week once my dealer brings them over.

Unfortunately, my wife wouldn't allow me to get both. I tried to get her to let me put the Sopra's in the living room where the Focal Aria 938's are now.

Wow! Good for you man!

I am interested in you take on the differences between the 2. I know you were a B&W owner in the past, and they pulled out all the stops when they redesigned the new series.

I have heard the Sopra and they are fantastic as well.

The Focal Utopias are simply amazing, but the recent iterations have driven the cost up considerably...the new versions of mine are now $41,000–Holy price increase Batman!

Look forward to your post...glad you are a part of the audiophile thread.

Yeah, a dealer over in Marietta has the new Stella Utopia’s in the showroom. They’re in the white gloss finish and simply stunning. They legit could pass as modern sculptures. The MSRP is 65k a pair. I gave him a shite by saying that I thought they were supposed to be a high end Focal dealer, but didn’t see a pair of the new Grande Utopia’s on the floor. They retail at 120k a pair. Said he sold one pair to a local athlete simply because they were 120k. Week later he came into store asking if he can return because “they ain’t no bangin’ loud party speaker.”

Anyway, the Stella Utopia’s sounded stunning. I didn’t want to fall in love with them because every speaker in my budget sound like a Sonos sound bar in comparison. I listened to 3 songs and bolted. If i win the lottery or inherit 7 figures, then we are in bidness.

He must be having a blowout sale!!

Focal just updated a couple of speakers in The Utopia line, but they weren’t major changes—internal wiring and crossovers. The new pricing is as follows...

The MSRP on the Grand Utopia is $215,000
The MSRP on the Stella Utopia is $102,000
The MSRP on the Maestro Utopia is $58,000
The MSRP on the Scala Utopia is $41,000

They aren’t playin’ around

Marco... my buddy is building a house right now. He is going to have a dedicated listening/tv room. It isn’t super big (listening room), but the frame of the house is up. Is there something I should tell him to make sure gets done?

Run a conduit down each wall. Also run cat6 cable down each wall. Also run a couple power outlets down each wall and make a couple of them dedicated.

Have a central closet for all network routers, modems, switches to run to.

Alright, so i ended up purchasing a Hegel H160 the other day from my friend instead of the Quad Vena (which I really liked). Now I'm wondering what speakers to use with it? I have some old cambridge audio speakers that will do in the meantime, but would definitely like to upgrade those at some point.

Speakers will be placed on a desk, so bookshelf sized. under $2k, and used is fine if there is a specific model(s) i should keep an eye out for. Would those Kef ls50's posted above be a good match? I've heard great things about them based on their cost.

And finally, do you have any general rules or guidelines you follow when matching amps to speakers? Feel free to point me in the direction of an answer you may have already given in this thread. Thanks sir.

Hegel H160 specs:

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
Power output: 150W + 150W into 8 Ohms, 250W + 250W into 4 ohms
Analog inputs: 1 balanced (XLR), 1 unbalanced (RCA), 1 home theatre (RCA)
Analog outputs: 1 fixed line level (RCA), 1 variable line level (RCA)
Digital inputs: 1 coaxial S/PDIF, 3 optical S/PDIF, 1 USB, 1 ethernet (RJ45)
Frequency response: 5Hz-100kHz
Signal-to-noise ratio: More than 100dB
Crosstalk: Less than -100dB
Distortion: Less than 0.005% @ 50W 8 Ohms 1kHz
Intermodulation: Less than 0.01% (19kHz + 20kHz)
Damping factor: More than 1000 (main power output stage)

I would give Zu Audio Omen bookshelf a chance. Call and talk to Gerrit - he is the founder and ofter answers the phone - and make sure they fit with what you are trying to achieve. They will be right at the upper end of your budget. Very high-end cabinetry in addition to sounding great, and you can in-home them for 60 days with a no questions asked return policy.

Yeah I’ve never experienced anything like that before. My body is spent. I think I finally passed out at like 9am and just woke up a few hours ago.

The new MusicDirect catalog arrived yesterday...this thing grows every year. It is 300 pages thick for 2019.

They really do a great job with the layout of this annual catalog.

They also did the year in a cool way too—like a limited number on an LP...No. 0002019

That is pretty cool mine should be here tomorrow.. I've been reading all weekend I think I'm going to save up and grab those Odyssey Stratos monos, if anyone sees a used pair pop up let me know I've seen some that went cheap. I really think that might be best for down the road
