You will need a phono pre-amp, as the QUAD integrated does not have one. I always recommend the Lehmann Black Cube (which MUsicDirect sells), but it is $500--but worth every penny as it also will handle MC and MM cartridges and is pretty adjustable. It is also DEAD QUIET--very important in a phono amp.

If you don't want to spend $500--they sell lesser models--probably half that. Pick one.

Keep in mind that you will also need RCA cables to go from the turntable to the phono pre, and another set of RCAs to go from the phono pre to the integrated amp. The standard length is 1m, but you can get longer if you need to do a longer run. AudioQuest cables will work fine for your applications. Get one of the entry lines of AudioQuest.

Also--cables have a huge mark up--you can negotiate these.

You may not get a whole lot off the QUAD integrated, but you should get something off the entire deal if you get it all from MusicDirect--just ask them for 15% off and free shipping--they may do it for you.

You will also need a pair of speaker cables. AudioQuest should work here or even KimberKable.pick one in your budget. The standard is 2 or 3 meter--I always go for the 3 meter as it gives you a little bit of play in case you ever move the speaker or amp.

If you plan on connecting a computer, you will need a USB cable with a Type B on one end (the sort of square one) to go into the digital input on the integrated amp...the other end is a standard type A that plugs into the computer.

Wal-Mart or Amazon works for this.

I bought the "puck" center weight that you recommended, too

I never play a record without a weight. The weight really helps flatten the record to the platter. Many records, even 180g ones, aren't perfectly flat.

I still say one of the best things in my big rig is the "perifery ring" that VPI makes. It is a 5 lb. steel ring that hangs on the outermost millimeter of the record and holds it flat to the platter--it negates just about any warp while adding mass and momentum to the platter.
I seldom play an LP without it.

You'll like the quad.... Marco steered me that way and I'm enjoying the shite out of my set up. It pushes a pair of Vandersteen 1Ci and I have a VPI nomad TT.

Don't forget the cables! Music direct has a bunch or at least had a bunch of audioquest cables on closeout.

Marco that reminded me i need to get a slab for myself.... been repainting the house and it's slipped my mind. Oh and I haven't heard a peep out of the table since I had that issue a while back. No noise what so ever. Need to break down and get a power conditioner too.

This Furman is what I use for the outdoor system.

I have a Rotel 5 x120 amp, a tuner, 2 Sonos Connect, a DVD player, and a TV running through it. It really works well--with all the power in the house being cut on and off the last 3 weeks with the new room build, the Rotel amp blew a capacitor. The Furman surge would shut the entire system down after about 1 second of the amp shorting, and the display on the front showed the voltage running up to 145 (120 is normal) before shutting down.

davidlsu,

If you want to spend a few hundred more on speakers, the Vandersteen 1Ci that HerbertFest08 just bought are the real deal.

And I believe MusicDirect sells them too--but doesn't really discount Vandersteen.

Vandersteen has been around for 40 years and they make true audiophile grade gear...their reference Vandersteen Model 7's are pushing $70k now!

If you can wait a couple months, I should have a few of them cut from that slab I posted.

Do you need to purchase a separate sub for those?

If that's an open offer, sign me up.

And that periphery ring sounded like a great idea. I noticed that a few of the new 180g LPs I purchased still "rocked" the tonearm a little with some very minor outer edge bumps. But then I saw that it's a $1000 accessory.

Oh, to dream...

I thought I was going to have to.... buy when you set them up right you get good, relatively deep and tight bass out of them. They don't go super low and hard, but it's enough for me. They are a 2-way speaker. Vandy sends pretty detailed directions with them on how to set them up in the room and how to set up them on their stands (separate purchase).
I also have them hooked up via an optical cable to the tv and the quad.

So would it be better to get this or the quad I just wanted to make sure before I make this decision

Another option for the turntable is that you can do what I did. Find a VPI nomad, they have an updated version of the Nomad called The Player now.
It comes with the phono amp in he table. If you can get your hands on the nomad somewhere it can be had for what it cost for the project Carbon and a separate preamp.

I started out going the Carbon DC, Lehman black cube preamp, peachtree integrated amp and elacs.
Ended up with VPI nomad, quad vena and the vandys with all medium level audioquest cables.

Marco says the Lehman black cube statement is where it's at for the money. Damn near completely silent if not void of any noise at all.

I'm painting the house right now and getting new furniture for the living room.... I don't mind waiting a couple months. Definitely a cool piece of granite.

davidlsu,

The Cambridge you linked is a receiver (has an FM tuner) while the QUAD is an integrated amp. They aren't quite in the same league. It has to do with the power supplies and spacing of the circuit boards on the inside.

As for the Pro-Ject tube box, I have one, and can say that it is not even close to the Lehmann Black Cube. The Lehmann is a solid state (not tube), and will thus give you a quieter noise floor. Tube phono stages do get dead quiet, but usually do so when you cross the $4000 mark.

And what HerbertFest08 said about the VPI Traveller can also be an option if you so choose.

Doc and HerbertFest,

I'll keep you posted on the granite slab--probably 8-10 weeks away from installing the countertop.
