Navigator Telecaster

Navigator Strat

Ishibashi Japan is a VERY reputable musical instruments dealer for what it's worth. I'd buy a guitar from them sight unseen. That Russian dealer on the LP above, however, I dunno about them.

ESP

And I always tend to forget about ESP, for whatever reason, but their use by guys like Kirk Hemmett, James Hetfield, and Eddie Van Halen should be enough for anyone to explore.

It's unlikely, but if I buy that Tele you linked, you're going to have to set it up at a discount. I will have to drive to BR, after all.

Mrs. Midnight isn't crazy about you right now.

"I know a guy' who took a chance and bought a Chibson. Because this guy just wanted to play in his own house and will never resell it as an original, he was thrilled to have an astonishingly good looking and pleasant to play $235 guitar. So, if you're a cheapskate and not over-demanding, there's that.

About 50 percent of the Chinese counterfeits/forgeries that have crossed my bench have had serious structural issues that would cost twice what people paid for them for me to fix properly. The other half were decent guitars, emphasis on "decent," nothing spectacular. I wouldn't take the risk personally, there are too many decent non-black-market guitars I can buy for that money, locally, but I'm also not the kind of guy to put down $235 on a blackjack hand haha

I pretty much exclusively own knock-offs, but not Chibson’s
The key is always to play it first. One knock-off turned out to be terrible, requiring me to send it back to the manufacturer who replaced it. It remained mediocre until I invested in new tuners and a new pickup. Now, it’s excellent, but for the money invested over the years, I likely could have gotten an ESP without any of those headaches. However, I use that guitar constantly and love it now.

The other is a late 1970’s Arbor that I found at an estate sale. It played beautifully, has real maple and a set neck, and just had some minor electronics issues that were very cheap to fix. I couldn’t be happier with it.

Short version: always try them first, know what to look for and how to identify good wood and straight necks, and some great values can be found, but not without substantial risk. If you’re a novice buyer, it’s much easier to go with ESP.

Respect that. I kind of feel weird about the headstock saying Gibson tbh.

Damn, I completely blew the opportunity to show off my ESPs haha. Both are mid-1980s, very early serialized old skool ESP.

The Random Star is an Akira signature Random Star, SN 2xx, crappily refinned by a previous owner. It is getting a pro refin later this year in a custom color the painter and I have dubbed "alien bile." Best described as candy pear yellowgreen, mixed with the largest paint-grade metal flake commercial spray guns can shoot. I did a full restoration on the neck, from new frets and headstock refin to a hand-rubbed Danish oil trunk finish, last year. That factory 3x3 Dano head is as rare as they come.

The M series, SN 3xx, sports a replacement alder I spec'ed in "Dorothy's Slippers" intense metal flake ruby red. The original body was white, solid maple and weighed over 10 pounds. That neck is a factory-logoed lawsuit strathead. You haven't been able to get that in the USA market for over 30 years.

No offense but the white guitar there is almost a perfect embodiment of why I stopped listening to heavy metal music in the early 80s. Looks like an Explorer had sex with a relative and that's what resulted.
