Also, Paul...I think your comparison between CC and BT&H is a bit skewed. I shudder at the idea of how many more times "Crossroads" was played than "S.on W. (Hey)" and I guarantee you its vastly polar opposite. C.C. was a southern Chicago outfit that was being blared among the weed fanatics (and at that time, not as many people were as open about that as 20 years later). They were popular (Monroe loved them), but "Crossroads" was being played on any and every rap/pop/light mix/top 40 station and I mean EVERY. I agree...BT&H blew up that summer, but they had already been widely acclaimed for "Thuggish..." 2 years earlier and, "First of the Month", "Bud Smokers Only" and "East 1999" earlier during fall of 95 and winter of 96. "Crossroads" was on another level than C.C., Outkast, and much of what hip-hop offered then. They were on Snoop/Dre/Pac levels...but they had a single that could hit any market.
It's ironic because BT&H, a Cleveland 4some, was very similar in its "grassroots" formation to C.C. A decent following of people liked songs from both, but platinum status was out of reach. For rap, in 1996, to get huge, you have to put that "Quincy Jones" touch on a sound...BT&H had never gotten close to that until Crossroads. "First of the Month" got it pretty damn close. Bone's sophomore album and then the "Set it Off" soundtrack just did them so many favors.

me and my baws were listening the shite out of aquemini when it came out in the late 90s.
and we lived in northern Ohio.
BTH was huge there no doubt but outkast had a presence.

Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik is #1. I think ATLiens and Aquemini are pretty equal. Great songs from both. If Slump and West Savannah were on ATLiens then I think it overtakes Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik

I'm going to listen to both over the next couple of days and come back with an opinion. I have a lot of fond memories riding around listening to both.

Aquemini was a much deeper album and parts of it were difficult to comprehend.
While I personally prefer ATLiens slightly, I have zero problem (and will agree with) anyone that says that aquemini is a better album.
Aquemini's uniqueness and originality outshines the more traditional hip hop sound of atliens.
imo, they are 2 of the 3 greatest hip hop albums of all time, along with gza's liquid swords.

guess your main point is that they didn't "sell out" until Stankonia,
And if so, that's a dumb point
