I was 12 years old the time. The family had season passes, so we went at least three times a week! My cousin and I would end up running all over the place, and my parents would always end up at the German beer Hall to 1 AM

I'm not from NO and I saw few concerts when I was young (po folks)

I only went to the fair once and the only music I remember seeing is a black guy with a guitar in the "blues shack" playing to 3 people

It is absolutely dreadful. Oddly enough, I have 2 of them. I collect '84 World's Fair stuff and I'm going to frame them with a ticket one of these days. Needed 2 to display each side, since the other side has the Wonderwall and whatnot.

Ok

I know your music taste and knowledge is deep--and I am actually familiar with many of the obscure artists you post. My dad has an very extensive New Orleans R&B as well as south LA swamp music library contained on thousands of 45rpm. He actually had a show on WYAT 990 AM back in the early '80's on Saturday mornings where he played all the deep stuff form his "vault".

I used to go with him and hang out in the studio and production room of WYAT and WLTS FM--it was the old building on Gentilly Blvd. next to the Fairgrounds. It is an urban station now. That is where I learned to cut carts and splice reel tape!!

I guess the acorn doesn't fall far from the tree.

My other hobby is Lionel Trains--O Gauge. I recently got a 900 series working O-Gauge street car with the 84 Expo logos on it. They were done back in 1983, and the guy who had 500 of them made and warehouse for almost 30 years. Just pull them out recently and began selling them. Electric train depot in Pontchatoula is selling them--$250 apiece. They even come with all of the official licensing paperwork.

I will try to post a picture of it tomorrow. I actually ran it on my layout and it works just fine.

You should start a LA music thread. This board has needed one from the beginning. I've considered doing it myself but 1) I actually don't know all that much about it, and 2) I have enough threads on here already -- BION every few months or so some of them actually get replied to.

If there is enough interest maybe the board could support several threads: swamp pop, zydeco, Cajun, LA blues, etc...

Start an OT thread for model trains. That thread a few weeks ago got some interest. I don't collect and know very little about the subject, but would enjoy reading about it.

Yeah, the LA music thread might catch...

I am now inspired to get some of the boxes of 45s from upstairs down...many of my dad's N.O. R&B 45s ended up here after Katrina. Some got wet, so we cleared a big space on the train layout and set up a temporary record cleaning station and cleaned thousands for a week straight. I had all the cleaning solutions on hand, so almost all were saved.

The only bad was that he had all of the original sleeves for the 45s in mint condition, and many of those were lost. I got a couple thousand new white sleeves for them and they are now all good to go.

They were in Metairie, so the records only got about an inch or so of water. Had they been in Lakeview, well that would be the end of them.

I used to go see the Sheiks pretty often when I was a freshman. We would dive down to New Orleans from BR and go catch them at Jimmy's.

Michael O'Hara, the singer for the Sheiks, has recently been performing solo in NOLA singing the old Sheiks songs. When the Sheiks broke up Michael signed a contract with one of the major record labels in Los Angelas as a song writer and was nominated for a Grammy for writing one of Anita Baker's biggest hits. She would often give shout outs to Michael onstage and call him "the greatest songwriter in the world ." Later Michael quit the business and became a preacher in his hometown of St. Louis because he was burnt out on living the rock and roll lifestyle (too much sex and cocaine). He posts regularly on the Sheiks Facebook page and answers all of the fans questions. They also publish when and where his next solo shows will be if anyone is interested.
