I recently got back into playing guitar when I found a deal on a JCM900 50W head and 2x12 Marshall 1936 cabinet. The amp is great but sounds like complete shite at low volumes. I even bought an attenuator so I can get the high volume gain sound but even at low volumes its just thin and fizzy. Cranking it produces GREAT sound but 50W tube amp with 2x12 speakers is loud as frick. I've never been able to get it past 2 o clock and be able to stand in the room with it.

I have a toddler so the only times I get to play are when he is napping or in bed at night so I wanted to get an amp that I could plug headphones into but also have some effects built in. I snagged a Marshall Code 100W head used on guitar centers website and its delivering today.

I'll admit, the amount of options on power amp, pre amp, cab sims, and FX looks awesome but watching some videos on the interface it looks a little complicated to use but they have an app that you can bluetooth to your amp and change settings from your phone.

Just checking to see if anyone else has one and some feedback on them? I browsed some threads on a Marshall forum and there were some folks that said its one of the greatest amps Marshall has put out and then then there are some that say they're crap and can't get any good sounds out of it

this is a modeling amp?

I have a Fender Mustang. Same deal if a Code is Marshalls answer to Fender. Reviews are "this is great" or "sounds like dogshit". No middle ground.

Sounds like you have experience with an amp you can "turn it up to 11". So you may not like it? Maybe you do. You can definitely find a clean tone and turn it down to 2 and it sounds similar. I can turn my Mustang down low enough that I hear the pick hit the strings over the amp.

What kind of speakers are currently in your cab? Sure they are the original Celestion ones? Had a friend with volume issues that were similar and realized his recently purchased used mesa cab was full of stock crate speakers.

I’m blanking on the actual name but I think it’s Celestine GT-75.

If its the speakers that actually came with the cab those are great for leads. Anyways, yeah..just throwing that out there. I'm not much into Marshall these days, but I wouldn't mind having a Marshall JCM900 4100 and a JCM2000 TSL60

The JCM900 is a great amp but you HAVE to crank them to get good overdrive sounds. At low volume it’s very thin and fizzy. Mine is a dual reverb model and the clean channel cranked sounds a lot like a Plexi.

I just got the amp hooked up but will be giving it a try after I put the baby to bed.

A couple Christmases ago I bought myself a Code 100 and the 4x12 cabinet they make for it (my understanding is that you won’t get peak performance out of it without the speakers made to pair with it). I absolutely love it. I play ‘80s-‘90s metal and have some great band sounds I downloaded into it. The preloaded sounds were okay, but I much preferred the custom ones. I don’t even remember how to fool with the settings now, but right after I got it, I had my college-aged kid pull up the Marshall Code site on his laptop and hook up to the amp (had issues getting bluetooth to work). We’d find a sound, e.g. Metallica Black Album, and run through a half dozen versions people had on the site, then save the best one. Did that for like 15-20 different bands. If I’m playing Iron Maidem, boom - click up to the Maiden setting and jam away. It’s amazing to be able to just switch to perfect band sounds for each song with just a tap of your foot. All my old effects pedals are in the closet now. Cranking the volume to 5 or 6 makes my ears ring for days.

Im still working on figuring out how to download patches and send to my amp. From what I can tell I’ll need the Editor app? I don’t have a PC and it’s not compatible with Mac.

I am impressed by the different amp voicings and they are pretty accurate to the originals. The plexi and JCM800 have been my favorites so far. I’m also impressed by how good the delay effect is. I haven’t had a good delay pedal in years so it’s fun to be able to mess around with that. The reverb is kind of weird and hard to dial in.

Yeah it’s much easier when you have an engineering student home for the holidays and can just say, “Here - figure this shite out.”
