We all know or should know who Dream Theater and Porcupine Tree are. However, there is so much more good stuff out there, not as well known.

Haken - Celestial Elixir

Circus Maximus - Glory of the Empire

Symphony X - The Odyssey

Riverside - Second Life Syndrome

What you got?

Not big on DT... but I love Porcupine Tree.

Progressive metal is like many genre terms... broad.

I guess Porcupine Tree, Rush, King Crimson would potentially be Prog rock.

Isis reminds me a bit of tool combined with a softer Pelican.

Dream Theater's Systematic Chaos album was a masterpiece of ProM.

I am well aware of Pelican. I have to be in the mood for them.
Isis and Pelican are different though and Tool is completely different.
In the same ball park , just tempo wise Tool is way up from Pelican.

but again can go either way IMO

Not really huge on Prog stuff.

I'm more into Black Metal and Doom.

I also like some Death and Thrash.

So, do you like Opeth, Mastodon or Voivod?

I like Mastodon (though I didn't care for the Hunter).

Never really listened to Voivod tbh. Anything you'd recommend?

Yeah thats also a new one for me

Mastodon is one of my favorite... The Hunter was a disappointment overall but has some good tracks on it.

Been years since I have heard Opeth.

I'm wondering if there are enough metal fans here to get a metal thread going?

It's not really my thing, but I know those three are around the progressive death scene.

Another new band - Bleeding Oath

Well there are various other threads of sub genres... why not. Try it?

Maybe not totally prog but close enough anyway

Ziltoid the Omniscient This is a Devin Townsend project and is a good mix of prog and metal. Fantastic album overall. This is just one song but the album really needs to be listened to in its entirety to fully enjoy.

Death - The Sound of Perseverance More death metal than prog, but definitely some strong prog elements.

Nevermore - Enemies of Reality Again more metal than prog but some heavy prog elements and actually decent vocals.

Krimh This is just one guy who plays guitar, bass, and drums, no vocals. He's best known as the former drummer for Decapitated but is doing his own stuff now. The sound is more like Pelican or Isis but a little heavier. He's one of the most talented musicians I've ever heard.

Wholeheartedly agree. A lot of hardcore fans dismiss this brilliant album, but I think it was their best since Scenes from a Memory, and slightly ahead of Six Degrees and Train of Thought.

Other prog metal bands I like:

Andromeda---The Words Unspoken

Stratovarius---Black Diamond

An awesome prog/power/melodic band is Kamelot:

Not a power guy, but I can get into Kamelot.

Also, try Serenity - [link=(

Sestematic Chaos was hit or miss. Dark eternal night and Constant motion were lacking while presence of enemies pt.1 and 2 brought it.

Had never heard of them before. Good recommendation. Thanks.

Another band I forgot to mention: Sonata Arctica. Maybe not so prog, but still a solid band. Heavy 'Euro' sound. Silence is an awesome album.

Necrophagist mostly death metal, but the prog influences are very strong.

Necrophagist certainly wins the best drummer category.

I've been on a big Baroness kick lately although admittedly, their older stuff is better I think.

Shameless self promotion-if anyone is near Charleston tonight, my band is playing with Darkest Hour. You should stop on by. It'll be a blast.
