any of you use a direct in box? Does the typical unit work with bass and guitar?

Other than to boost the signal is there any other advantage to an active rather than passive box?
A band mate and I are going to start booking some cafes and pubs. Sometimes I'll play acoustic/electric, which I already run straight into the board, but sometimes I'll play electric guitar or bass, so to save space I think I'll use a direct in box but I have never used one and am pretty clueless about them.

Question, where will this DI be in the chain? What do you hope to accomplish with it?
If you just want your guitar signal to the PA, just get a box like a Radial or Countryman or similar. If your guitar/bass is active, get a passive box. If guitar/bass is passive, you can get passive or active to give you a little boost or sizzle.
If you have pedals and the DI is at the end of the chain, I would get a passive box. If only the DI box and passive guitar/bass, I would go with the active box.
Then, you have to consider whether you want a box with a preamp or not. That would be for the real boost and color you asked about.

I'm a singer that plays some rhythm and acoustic to accompany the lead player, so I don't think I need more pedals for the cafe and pub gigs. I can put some effects on the channel I'm using on the mixer if I want that, but these will be mostly laid back songs as a duo, though if I like using the box I may use it for the band as well in which case I'd probably use a few pedals.

I used to do small gigs with just me another guy. I chugged chords on an acoustic and sang and I never thought the DI box did much. My acoustic has a preamp and equalizer built in so maybe that's why I didn't find the DI that helpful. Or more likely I just didn't know what I was doing.
