Nobody that i knew, myself included, really "got" this album til the mid-to-late 90s
I would include myself too. I did have a friend that absolutely loved it. Of course he thought of sampling as sonic photography. However, Check Your Head I totally got first time I heard it and it brought be back to PB.

Hello Brooklyn used to rock the house.

The last track, "B-Boy Bouillabaisse," is on par with the second side of The Beatles' Abbey Road as an engaging suite of short, mostly incomplete songs that miraculously segue into each other to make a masterpiece. Pocket, HIP HOP symphony.
This. I listened all they way through the album again today. I imagine people were pissed as hell with it in 1989. I'm sure many a people lost their shite when "5-Piece Chicken Dinner" they first time they heard it: "What the frick is this shite, where is Fight for your Right part 2?"

Does PB rank in your Top Five?

Hip hop? Without a doubt.
Overall? No but falls in the top 25 to 35, which on my list is most definitely a compliment.

It's a trip

Some might have been but I wouldn't say pissed b/c we would still jam out to Hey Ladies and Shake Your Rump but it left me thinking they were a flash in the pan with Licensed to Ill. But like I posted earlier, when Check Your Head came out I totally "got" it. That one is still my favorite one to this day and it gave you a better understanding of who they really were and maybe Licensed to Ill really wasn't them but an act.

I remember reading an interview a while back where the Beastie Boys wanted to play instruments on songs on License to Ill (just like Check Your Head), but were told that would be a bad idea.
If you listen to "Girls", it has a cheesy electronic punk beat. I'm pretty sure they originally wrote that one as a punk song.
My entire high school weekend night experience involved an old 72 VW Beetle, illegally bought underage liquor, weed, and Paul's Boutique.

The bong rip sample in Shake Your Rump still gets a smile out of this mon

I remember an interview with Robert Plant on MTV when Now and Zen was released and he stated he had the opportunity to have Rick Rubin produce Now and Zen but he was afraid three clowns would be ripping off his music. Funny at the time but what an ironic statement.
