311 and Sublime are two opposite ends of the same spectrum. Its kind of like comparing Pearl Jam and Nirvana, sure its possible but its kind of silly.

That was the point I was trying to make.

Hell, I'm listening to Rx Bandits right now. They get better the further they get from their ska roots.

well I was mostly just disposing of bobbyrays absurd claim that the two bands were "galaxies apart" when they're so clearly not. but there's no need to be a pedant.

I was referring to the distance between the quality of music made by 311 and the quality of music made by Sublime.

Galaxies apart.

But they really don't sound anything alike. I'm not sure how you classify 311. And I really can't speak intelligently on the differences between reggae and ska and dub and whatever other genres are getting tossed around in this thread. I put 311 in a genre I call "bad music".

311 and Sublime toured together in 2011. Don't think it's that much of a stretch to mention the two in the same breath.

Sublime has been dead since 1996.

it was Sublime with Rome, not the real Sublime.

I'm not retarded, dude. I understand that. I just don't think any band that doesn't have Brad Nowell singing for them should try to pass themselves off as Sublime.

I would agree that 311 (garbage) and Sublime were different kinds of bands, but I can see the parallels...

I dont think Sublime ever had what it took to make it big... The "ska" sounds been around before them and after them and its always had a niche audience... I never saw anything from his songwriting to suggest he was on the verge of anything ground breaking... They had some fun songs and that was about it...

One of my favorite bands

I became friends with the bassist Joe so he'd always hit me up when they came to NOLA and we get food/drinks before and after the show...they are all cool dudes and their drummer Chris is certified BA

Nobody did it or done it like Brad. He was genuine, knew he was a frickup, knew his addiction would kill him (Pool Shark), but he knew he was the mf man. I've been listening to Sublime for years now and definitely don't put them anywhere near today's 311, 'Music' and 'Grassroots' maybe.

+1

Some of Sublimes best songs like Pool Shark never made it to radio. I think the band might've faded on the national scale soon after Self Titled but would've kept making good music for the core audience. Which was always potheads and surfer types.
