What the hell is Sweet Baby Inc...
What companies like Sweet Baby, Inc do is to advise a company how to bring in their team of top-notch narrative drivers in order to deconstruct the game's story and then rebuild it to make the upcoming game more socially accepting, diverse, inclusive, etc. What this means in reality is anything from subtly pushing transism as being normal (Hogwarts) to degrading specifically white male leading characters into being weak idiots (the difference between Joel in Last of Us vs the sequel) in order to make some character who is not a straight, white male into a more central figure.
A video of one of the co-founders of Sweet Baby, Inc discussing what they do.
For those not wanting to click the link. Kim Belair (the co-founder) is speaking at a conference and has a PowerPoint slide up. The slide reads: "Bring in marginalized collaborators at the beginning and ask them how to make it great rather than less bad."
While that is up, here's her quote:
quote:
Uhm, if you're a creative working in triple-A (AAA games), which I did for many, many years. Uhm, put this stuff up to higher ups and if they don't see the value in what you're asking for when you ask for consultants, when you ask for research...
The slide changes around this point to read: "AAA: Build connections with marketing to express the value of inclusion."
quote:
Go have a coffee with your marketing team and just terrify them with the possibility of what's going to happen if they don't give you what you want.
In other words, they get employees to scare the company with threats of isms until they hire a company like Sweet Baby, Inc to come in. That company then tears apart whatever story the game was being built around then makes at least some aspect of it focus on diversity, equity and inclusion (especially if it's at the expense of strong male characters).
We've already seen this time and again with streaming adaptions of popular literature (Rings of Power, Wheel of Time) as well as movies.
As such, they look for any excuse to make anything about race (such as not waiting even a day after his death to call Akira Toryama a racist). Here's the character being talked about:
That's Mr. Popo. He trained Goku and is very powerful. Also, he's a genie so he's not even human (he doesn't even have a nose), he even travels on a magic carpet. He's closer to being Marvin the Martian than he is of African descent.
Does the character resemble racist drawings from early-mid 20th Century US? Sure. But that's like saying Charlie Brown and his friends all turn into Klansmen on Halloween.
In other words, Sweet Baby, Inc is a company that creates and/or fans the flames of a hypersensitivity to social groups and then pushes themselves onto gaming companies as the solution to such hypersensitivity.
