Barely anyone knew of it in limited release. I worked at a movie theater when it was released, we did not think it was real by the point the masses were getting trailers and prepping for it, which is when 99.99999% of TD would have seen stuff about it. They tried to market it that way, sure, but it sounds like you were pretty impressionable.
It’s not like movie reviews just popped up with social media and YouTube either, reviewers were calling it a fake documentary after its Sundance showing.
The actors were definitely not out promoting it at all, at least initially. IIRC, they were even claimed to be dead or missing to help with the whole mystique of the movie.
It was absolutely marketed as genuine found footage and the people in the videos missing and presumed dead. That was sort of the whole point behind it. I don’t remember specifically but wasn’t the footage supposedly “found in the ruins of an old house in the woods” or something like that? I remember hearing about that and then looking stuff up on the internet about it.
People today just don’t realize what the internet was back then. It was nothing like it is now.

No, it had porn.

BWP is one of the most polarizing movies out there. People were either terrified by it or they hated it.
I’d love to see a psychological study of people who hated it versus people who loved it.
I bet there would be some basic character trait like empathy or narcissism strongly correlated with it.

As I posted earlier in this thread, I had never heard of it until the day I walked in to see it during the limited release. I sure as hell wasn't up to speed on whatever the hell happened at Sundance that year.

Me and a group of friends were going to see it the second weekend it was out I think. It was sold out, we had to go see Phantom Menace instead.

I really thought it was real.
I’ll never understand this. Did people really think there was found footage of people actually dying and the authorities released it to theaters?
