For me it's Ghibli. They've never made a film that was less than great, and I would put Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke above anything Disney has made.

Note: Yes, I'm including Pixar movies

Disney has a lot more volume, history, and cultural influence on American film. I do prefer actually watching Ghibli movies though.

If you're including Pixar, then it pretty much has to be Disney. They have the advantage of many, many more movies to choose from, and lots of them are great. If you'd ask who has the more consistently good catalogue, then the question becomes a bit harder because Disney also has quite a few average and below-average films too.

That's essentially what I'm asking. You can't completely throw out volume as a criteria, but I'm asking which catalog is better pound for pound

It seems like it might be Ghibli in this case, but since I've only seen five of their movies -- I went through a list on-line and hadn't even heard of half of them -- I'd mainly be going off reputation. But pound for pound is also flawed. In honor of the "The Godfather" discussion recently (AMC airing them seems to be the catalyst) I'd say John Cazale is the single most successful actor in history, pound for pound. He only has 5 full-length movies to his name: Dog Day Afternoon, The Conversation, The Godfathers I & II, and Deer Hunter. Every single one of them is considered a masterpiece. But he's clearly not the most successful actor of all time, so we need to insert a caveat for the pound for pound criterion too.

With Disney and Pixar combined, it's obviously Disney. Even without Pixar, I think Disney still beats it. It is the most influential film studio in movie history. Yes Disney has bigger duds than Ghibli, but its influence can not be overstated.

Really it becomes a contest when it's Ghibli vs Pixar. Both have a similar number of films and similar level of quality. And to be honest, this question I don't have an answer to. They're both equally spectacular for different reasons. I mean, you can't really compare Princess Mononoke to WALL-E. Both are masterpieces for different reasons.

apples to oranges.

Disney is a giant throwing out multiple movies a year. They dont need to be great. It disney, it'll do well domestically and probably foreign. That's what really matters to them.

Ghibili puts out a movie once every year or two. It's way more of a work of art than just another movie. They are mostly all well reviewed. They are semi popular here, probably do way better in asian markets.

Cant knock disney for having duds/cant knock ghibili for not putting out something that great more often
