Other than episodes 1-7 I've read the only the Thrawn trilogy. Which set should I get in before the premier?

Dark disciple-tied up the assaj ventless storyline. Set during the clone wars. Cool look into the non-Sith dark side
Lords of the sith- relationship of vader and palpatine. Birth of the rebellion
A new dawn- gives grand scale to the Galaxy and is all about how the empire is watching people at all times. The team from rebels is formed
Tarkin- the story of tarkins rise in the empire
Shadows of the empire- in between episode 5-6

I'd start with those because those are cannon. After that, there's some good stuff that episode 7 will just write over.

Read the Darth Bane trilogy. Takes place way before the prequels

They just released one called aftermath. Tells what happens between Jedi and the new movie.

Has a pretty mediocre Amazon rating but I am curious.

I think that the lower Amazon ranking is because there was huge blowback because one of the main characters is gay, but I really don't have much interest in it because I heard it really does nothing at all to tell us what happens after the battle of Endor or give a good idea of what's to come. And I've been on a huge Star Wars book binge (last 5 books I read were Star Wars)

According to my kindle, I'm about 25% of the way through. It isn't bad at all. A lot of detail so far about different aspects of a reeling Empire.

This another good series is the Thrawn books. I was really hoping the new movies would have been about either Thrawn or the Vong.

Disney wiped all the books from cannon when they bought Star Wars. The only cannon book now is the newest release called Aftermath.

Not just aftermath. All the ones I named are officially in the cannon.

I thought they said all books that were written before the purchase were wiped from canon.

Shadows of the Empire was always my favorite. Even though it's no longer canon, I doubt anything from the new SW/Disney universe will really contradict it (events of Luke, Leia, and Lando between ESB and ROTJ).

Read it a couple of times.

Splinter of the Mind's Eye was a good stand alone book.
