This. I was trying to explain that to the wife after seeing it. Sure, the originals had moments like when C3PO was freaking out that he thought he let Luke, Han and Leia get crushed in the trash compactor, but that was a more natural, believable moment.
The prank call was just..out of place. It didn't seem like something that would really happen in that serious moment. I'm not saying I don't consider it funny, but that was something I expect in a Guardians of the Galaxy action-comedy type movie, not Star Wars. It was more child-like, slap-stick humor, which is what everyone hated about Jar-Jar in the prequels.
