As a kid, my favorite was Big Jake. Probably followed by Sons of Katie Elder.
Also those other 2 Wayne flicks that are almost exactly the same. One has James Caan, the other had Ricky Nelson. I grew up watching Wayne when networks actually showed movies.
As an adult, Lonesome Dove. Doubt that will change. Would be nice if it changed because that would mean someone put out one helluva good Western.

The Cowboys is a great one too. If you haven't seen it, look it up. The Dukes hires a bunch of young schoolboys to help him make a cattle drive.

Cowboys is good.
I guess I should break mine down into subsets.
Recent Movies - Open Range
Mini-Series - Lonesome Dove
Series - Deadwood

For me, a great western is about capturing the era. It must portray the struggle of maintaining civility on an expansive and unruly frontier where uncivil behavior quite easily goes unpunished without vengeance being a significant motivation. For me, a great film must have a psychological appeal. I need more than just pretty faces, clever dialogue, and cool action scenes.
Four come to mind:
The Good, The Bad and the Ugly
Unforgiven
True Grit (Coen Brothers)
The Proposition
I have never been able to wrap my head around how anyone can believe that Tombstone is a great Western. I find it to be an embarrassment to the Western genre.

Once Upon A Time in the West.... by a long shot.
