He starred in all three seasons of the Knick up until like this year.
The Knick was only 2 seasons, and it ended 3 years ago.
He was great in it, and it explains his disappearance in 2014-2015 if you missed the show, but that was three years ago.
He has disappeared unless you saw Valerian.

I think he's still locked inside that bank wall.
And I don't agree with OP. Dude was never an A list actor. Maybe a B list but that was it, and I like Clive Owen.

Sin City was too much of ensemble for that to be his “big” franchise.
Almost all of the rising stars from the turn of the century NEED/NEEDED a franchise. That’s how Hollywood works now. No more bouncing around from Top Gun to Cocktail to Born on the 4th of July for example...you need Top Gun 2: Return of the Bogies sprinkled in there. Though Cruise became a franchise guy too.
Even Cooper had 3 Hangovers and an A-Team attempt, besides his excellent voice work for Marvel.
Bale of course had his.
Damon had Bourne.(of course slightly older)
I guess Gosling finally took one on.
Of course, you have to more than that, but still.
Point being to be bankable and get “choice” roles you have to a Tentpole release.
Sin City was overstylized crap that Owens was maybe the C story.
He never picked “that” role.
Leo is an exception, though he should have been Anakin.

I'll always remember him in Closer.

Closer was one of my favorites of his movies. Especially when he called Julia Robert's character a "slag".

Closer...forgot about that one.
I was hoping he’d be Bond back in the day.

He was fantastic in Children of Men back in 2006.
Terrible as Ernest Hemingway (along with Nicole Kidman) in HBO Original movie Hemingway and Gellhorn in 2012.
Now he's doing TV commercials for SAP, and not looking so good...

He's a great actor but never did the big budget thing to get super-famous. Also hurt him that he didn't hit his stride in America until his mid-40s.
