Saw it last night.
For the record, love Pans Labyrinth
Thought this was beautifully shot, great acting, soundtrack, and cast
With that said, my wife and I couldn't get over the damn love storyline between her and a damn creature. When she has sex with him my wife literally LOL.
That, flooding the bathroom, all the scenes with her and him were too over the top for me
It's crazy to think this will win best picture, but I know critics like "different".
Imo I liked 3 billboards, the post, and darkest hour much better

We enjoyed it.
My ole lady discovered a fetish for seaman porn apparently.
I'm enjoying that.
I kept expecting Strickland and Fleming to have a discussion about denying precious essence.
Giles and Zelda made the story for me with their failed romances against the budding romance.

There's another thread on it that I commented on, but I'll sum up here...
It was a movie I appreciated but didn't love. The cinematography is great, and I love how del Toro's love of old movies shines through. And Richard Jenkins is friin' amazing in it, while Michael Shannon is, well, Michael Shannon.
But it didn't move me. I saw what it was going for, and I thought everything was well-made and well-done, but at the end of the day... the monster never felt like a character to me. Even during his escape, he is an object upon which action happens to, not a driver of the things that happen. He doesn't seem to have any motivations other than "escape", which is no different than an animal would have. I never connected with him, and I never really understood why she loved him.
I mean, it was explained to me in the movie. I know the logical reason. But it didn't move me. I didn't viscerally understand her motivation. I got Jenkins; his casting about for love in the face of a world that rejects him made him an adorable sad sack. I connected with him.

My only beef really is that he introduces it can "talk" relatively quickly. But we never get much besides showing it learned egg and it asking for her to join him in the last act.
Of course the creature knew who she was the whole time. So it not needing to communicate makes sense there. But 10 or 15 minutes more of run time would've maybe helped.
