it was a box office success as well with a budget of $9M and grossed over $82M. a young director from Crowley, Texas (Bryan Bertino) wrote the script and received permission to direct the film despite having never directed before after Mark Romanek was originally hired to direct it, but demanded a $40M budget. I'd say they hit a home run with that decision. also found this -
***POSSIBLE SPOILERS FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NOT SEEN IT***
Rogue Pictures' producers confirmed to Variety that a sequel is in the works, tentatively titled The Strangers: Part II. The film will be written by Bryan Bertino and directed by Laurent Briet. Shock Till You Drop reported that Realitivity Media put The Strangers: Part 2 on hold because they found that the movie might not be in their interest, even though Universal Pictures is willing to release it. However, Rogue Pictures confirmed in January 2011 that the sequel is now in production, and will begin filming as early as April 2011. The plot follows a family of four who have been evicted from their home due to the economy, and are paid a visit by the same three strangers from the first film. It is not known whether the sequel will receive a theatrical or a straight-to-DVD release. Liv Tyler will return as Kristen McKay while the original three masked villains are also set to return, however, in an interview Tyler had announced that she would only have a minor role.

I've seen it twice. Not impressed. The story has been implemented by dozens of better movies.

Loved it. Everything I need in a scary movie.

I hope not. I didn't think The Descent was scary at all.

I've never seen it, but back in like 5th grade when the trailer came on during commercials I'd turn off the TV . shite looks creepy.

Did you watch the British or American version?

??? Frick, I don't know.
Just thought it was kinda lame, to be honest.

It is very simple. But it's one of those movies that is scary because it's believable. It stuck with me for a few days after watching.

The movie was sort of lame
But the situation is what horrifies me

An incredibly creepy film. You spend most of the film waiting for things to happen.. which is terrifying, honestly. I'm with those who think The Descent is even better, but I do love this movie.

Watched both versions of the Strangers...preferred the foreign version b/c it was more cat and mouse...whose out there, what's going on? It started out more playfull and then got creepy and then became serious...while the American version you knew was going to end bad right away...it was more in your face and upfront...as is typical in the difference between European and American cinema.

Probably the scariest movie I've seen the past 10 years. Not even kidding.
this
eta: my wallet fell out of my shorts pocket when I went to see it. Went back the next day during a matinee (nobody in the theater) to look. It was during the last scene. I nearly pissed myself.
With all that being said. I'd feel 110% certain that I wouldn't succumb to the antagonists in that movie if I had something as simple as a baseball bat.
