I really think that the opening scene with Drew Barrymore is one of the best horror scenes ever. I love it.

Neither, it's brilliant. It dodges both genres and their conventions while at the same time being a top tier representation of each.

At the time people would have assumed that she was going to be the main protagonist. It was really clever to kill her right off the bat to set the audience off balance.

I worked at a video store when this came out. People were upset that Drew was not in the movie longer. Most of the people rented the movie thinking she was the main character. Clever way to get people to the movie by Craven.
