SPOILER

quote:

There was no need for him to be the actual Billy the Kid.
If he wasn't Billy the Kid, it wouldn't be "Old Henry".

Henry McCarty was the legal birth name of Billy the Kid. Him being Billy the Kid was the whole basis of the movie, it wasn't some lazy twist thrown in at the end for shits n giggles.

Yeah, I got that. I googled the name the first time they said it in the movie. It was cute how they did that.

I’m just saying the entire movie could’ve happened without him being Billy the Kid. Nothing specific to Billy the Kid’s history motivated the bad guys (unless one of them was secretly Pat Garrett). Making him Billy just took me out of it a bit. Still a good movie, just felt that was an unnecessary flourish - as if the movie was expecting me to gasp at the revelation of his identity.

I know a bit about Billy the Kid…mostly Young Guns era and Brushy Bill story. But I had no idea about his original name. That takes the movie from a good western with a somewhat weird twist to throw in someone historically famous to a great movie with a detailed plan from the start.

I called early he was associated with the Kid because of the article about Lincoln County and the war. I thought he would be a minor gunslinger at first. Then started thinking he may be Garret even though I didn’t know why he would be off the grid.

Pretty good how Dorff’s character kept alluding he remembered the Henry name. A lot of clues were there that are more obvious in hindsight.
