This movie fricking sucked like Training Day.
There was a great performance by an excellent actor,then a bunch of completely unbelievable shite happened.
Horribly written.

I would say for them to show if the family actually reconile and what happen at his marine trial.

But, i loved this movie. Not big into UFC and wasnt excited when I watched, but it had me on the emotional roller coaster ride the entire time. Noltes character was spot on, as was Tom Hardy.
+1 When Nick Nolte left the casino and went to get drunk to piss away 3 years of sobriety after his son throws a cup of tokens at him and tells him to get the frick out of his face...

Powerful scene. The symbolism of Nolte's character listening to Moby Dick the entire movie comes full circle here.

Edit: I just watched this movie for the first time this week. Definitely one of my favs now

This is open for interpretation, but I think its fairly obvious that the director shows Nolte does NOT reconcile with his sons. Again, this is shown through the symbolic use of Moby Dick throughout the film.

Nolte = Captain Ahab
Healthy family with sons = Moby Dick

Ahab never catches Moby Dick and it actually destroys him in the end of the book. In the movie, the entire casino scene and follow up scene showing Nolte drunk while listening to the part of the audio book where the whale destroys the boat & crew mirror each other. Its the directors way of showing the viewer that Nolte's chase for a healthy family just came crashing down and isnt meant to be, ultimately destroying him (breaking years of sobriety).

Even the final scene of the movie is of the two brothers walking out together, but Nolte nowhere in the picture.

IMO, the director is showing Nolte doesnt reconcile with the sons without coming out and specifically saying/showing it.
