Wanted a spoiler specific thread

I liked it for all the wrong reasons. I liked it for the weird/crazy art critics interacting in over the top ways in the satirical way.

Some of the horror stuff was interesting. I thought the thing that killed Jake was creepy. And the British chick’s death was weird.

But the movie did a horrible job of really explaining what was happening. In some movies, mystery is good but not here. I kept waiting for some reveal.

I think some of the horror elements come stronger towards the end of the movie though.

The script could have used a few reworkings. Make it funnier and more of a satire.

It was a cool idea with a neat little ending, but honestly they could have made that movie better by only making it an hour long. The premise worked but everything else was dragged out too much to make it a feature length film. Of course, Gyllenhaal was the best thing about it, and the way the art went about offing people was cool too. But for a horror/suspense movie it seemed oddly toothless, and what humor there was fell flat most of the time. If it was funnier, the movie would have worked much better as a black comedy.

The paintings were cursed. They didn't explain how or why, other than the fact that the artist was abused as a child.

Yeah, it was cursed because he used blood to do the paintings.

But why did other people’s artwork start killing people?

I mean, the freaking tattoo killed her.

That isn’t explained.

There’s no reason for that other painting to be casting cursed.

For the longest time, since the first real death, I thought the paintings were going to drag everyone into them and we’d see a reveal shot at the end just showing that. But no, not really.

i think his art was 'real' (bc of the blood) which allowed it to interact with the real world and the art world. it was part of both, so it could alter both

True. The cursed artist didn't create the sphere or the robot.

They said anyone who profited from selling his art got killed.

I understood it that they were supposed to die because of their infatuation with the self-important art world and that any art could get them.

From the director/writer interview-
quote:

Then we decided any piece of art can be a conduit for this malevolent spirit. We tried very much to make that clear to the audience. When other objects of art are being inhabited, I'll tell you the trick: Any time somebody's about to be killed by a piece of art, we'd always underline the fact that there was a Dease painting in a room, there was a Dease reference. Dease is here and he's coming through the art.

It was a cool idea with cheesy execution. It felt like a weird "made for tv" movie at times.
