I’ve actually always thought the original Rocky is a great look at poor whites not in a southern setting.


As someone who’s now lived almost half my life in and very familiar with the world above the MDL, “white trash” (racist at that) is alive and well and rampant all over the “Union” states.

There are areas just outside of NYC, DC, and Chicago and any other metropolis that would make Chalmette look bougie.


But back to Rocky, Stallone’s take on poor yanks is about as real you'll find on screen imo, which is particularly relevant in a thread about Urban Cowboy because Rocky is another one of the few that show that life in an urban setting. Most stories about this demographic defer to a rural portrayal, excluding more classic films like On the Waterfront pre white flight from big cities.


Good Will Hunting is one of the more realistic modern takes on poor whites in a big city setting as well.


I have to say this thread is going to make me give Urban Cowboy a watch. I wasn’t old enough to watch when it came out, and I’m honestly not sure I’ve ever seen it all the way through. If I have it would have been in high school 25 or so years ago.

I did see SNF around that time and thought it was cheesy and lame, so I’m pretty sure I lumped this in with that, so I appreciate the take here and will give it another shot.
