Urban Cowboy is one of my favorite movies and I'll tell you why.

It captures white trash perfectly. I can't think of a mainstream movie that does it better.

Sissy is such a skanky, hot slut and Bud is the father of all plant baws. He's the frickin' OG plant baw. But I'll tell ya. As trashy as Bud was, Tony Manero was just as frickin' low class but in a different way.

Those Brooklyn shitheads in Saturday Night Fever were straight up guido bohunks and in alot of ways, worse than our southern variety of baw. And yeah, Saturday Night Fever is also one of my favorite movies as well.

If you can think of a movie that captures working white trash better than these two, let me know. I want to watch it.

Although great. Raising Arizona is more of a caricature. Urban Cowboy is the real deal.

Gummo is something else entirely though. Don't you think?

I grew up of modest means in the south. I can relate to Urban Cowboy and such ilk. I don't know anyone though who could possibly relate to Gummo and I don't want to know anyone who could either.

I like it because it's a great time capsule of the late 70s/early 80s, mostly because of the impact this film had on pop culture for a little while. Because of this movie and Dallas, boots and Cowboy hats with feather bands were everywhere and every bar was trying to get a mechanical bull.

Have never really been a big country music fan, but loved this soundtrack and a lot of the other country music that was popular around then. Still love music from people like Mickey Gilley and Jerry Reed.

I hate this movie was filmed in Pasadena, TX and not Denahm Springs. It’s perfect for being all about ‘that life’

Life on the Line was a good one and close bad arse baw movie although about lineman. It’s cheesy as hell but oddly a great cast. If you’ve worked in the industry, it’s more of a comedy.

Completely agree. The scene where Bud and Aunt Doreen talking out back after uncle Bob dies was perfect. A bleak and stark backyard with terrible grass a chain link fence and a shitty view perfectly captured that life.

I don't think many people realized how strikingly accurate it was to see Bud being so happy leaving the farm to hit the the "big time" life of working graveyards at the power plant and striving to live in a small, one-story ranch home under a the high-line on the outskirts of Houston.

It's so real it stings.

Barfly is a pretty white and trashy movie. The same goes for meth movies like Spun. Unless you're a fan of depressing movies, they're definitely not better than Urban Cowboy, though.

The only people who had tattoos in 1980 were bikers and sailors.

The phenomenon of every white trash dude having a sweet tribal barbwire tat or 12 didnt really come about until the 90s.

And as for realistic depictions of working/middle class southern folks, Dazed and Confused is way, way up there, too.

I can't think of a singular scene in a John Hughes movie that as remotely realistic to my high school experience, but, minus the paddling stuff, Dazed is likea home movie.
