This looks dumber than the movie about the cell phone that would kill you. The number called your phone, you answered, and then you died horrifically
The fictional one from Forgetting Sarah Marshal?

The Ring is about a VHS tape that kills people, and people like that movie (especially the original Japanese version)
Any premise can be turned into a good movie.

Saw this last night (sneak preview....theater was less than half full, though)
Me and my lady both thought it was meh. I've mentioned my love for horror movies on here before, and the leeway I give to them. I couldn't muster a glowing review for this one. I'll give a couple non-spoilery pros and cons
PROS:
-Really committed to the idea. The cast actually used the internet like...kids actually use the internet. I mean..maybe the skypeing was a little overboard?
-Writers seem like they were fluent in internet teen speak. It didn't feel forced, like some old guy trying too hard (see: Vince Gilligan writing for Jesse in the early seasons of Breaking Bad)
-Did a good job of setting up some tension at the beginning.
CONS:
-Not really that scary throughout. More chuckles than gasps.
-It trapped itself in it's format, and became repetitive. Part of what makes a horror movie a horror movie is surprise. This had barely any.
-You know which characters are going to be there last in the first 10 minutes. STOP DOING THIS! WE DON'T KNOW ANY OF THE ACTORS! Don't make one or two any more important than the others in this type of ensemble movie with some warmed-over subplot.
-Where were the parents in all of this? If there's 5 kids with their houses to themselves, why didn't they all convene at one of their houses to fricking rage? Are their parents all on the same couples retreat that returns at 6 AM the next morning?
OVERALL RATING: 4/10
