here's a link to a review ebert reposted on his blog, written by Barbara Scharres.
It's not entirely flattering. She has good and bad things to say about it. To me, the movie seems all over the place. There's the clips you see in the previews of the family, but the movie also follows a parallel story of the creation of the cosmos. It was described as an extremely high budgeted looking national geographic sequence, sometimes lasting up to 15 minutes without a human face.
quotes like this:
lead me to believe some people will absolutely love this movie or absolutely hate it. I have a feeling it will be very divisive. She described it this way:

The Genesis story is presented with a poetic bombast that some future viewers will find reverent, but others will find almost laughable.

The Tree of Life" is gorgeous to look at, lyrical, mystical, conspicuously spiritual in its message, and appears to have autobiographical elements. It's also, in part, profoundly kitsch.

"profoundly" is a strong word. I think it comes off as hokey in glimmers, not to the point of being overwhelming
edit: I also find it interesting that opinions can be reached so quickly in the world of professional critics. IMO that works as a detriment to translating a movie's full quality accurately. Outside of festivals the time between a screening and a published review is about 4 days, sometimes longer. With Cannes reviews are instantaneous. I have about 2 weeks to do a write-up on The Tree of Life. And thank god for that. I'd have a helluva time writing a perfectly concise review of a movie like this in mere hours.

Looks like it might be good after a few bong hits.

I guess it's more of a blog entry than review. She even talks about some other movie at the very end. I just found it very interesting some of what she had to say.

Inglorious Basterds was met with a cacophony of howls and boos at Cannes.
That's because it showed a French woman standing up against Hitler. The French audience could only suspend belief so much.

Closest I've ever come to getting paid to write a review was writing previews for an upcoming Dallas Mavericks season during their preseason. That gave me about two weeks to watch them & try to figure out how they might use new pieces.
Game stories were a different animal.
Games ended at 10:00 pm, you had written a synopsis of game action while watching the game, you rearranged that story and emailed it to an editor, talked to him about who to get quotes from, then went and got quotes.
You came back to your computer and pulled up the now edited story they had emailed back to you. You inserted the qoutes and emailed it back. Called and made sure they had it and then packed up and went home and hour and a half after the game had ended.
I can't imagine watching a movie and then writing a review of it. There is really no room for error in that situation.
