Lightsaber duels should be more about the characters than just flashy heavily choreographed fights.
And this is based on all of the lightsaber duels throughout movie history...

yes the overall story is very good...how palpatine rises to power my creating and manipulating conflict on his home planet...great story told through horrible dialogue...I mean the dialogue makes ewan mcgregor and liam neeson look like shite actors...natalie portman, I can't decide if she was a poor actor or the dialogue was just too bad

"People of the Senate, please just hear me out on this one. You see the Jedi, an organization of monks that have been the guardians of peace and justice for over a thousand generations, have suddenly decided to take over the world. Oh, and I just so happen to look and sound like a monster that wants to take over the world. Don't mind my creepy black cloak, my horribly evil voice, my Satanic eyes, or my terrifying face. Also don't mind that I am yelling about creating a Galactic Empire run exclusively by me. Oh no, you see, its the Jedi that are the ones who tried to take over, and that warranted them all being executed by the army that I control by myself without any trial in the courts to prove what I am saying is true. Yep, we just killed them all, including the children, and then we all burned down their Temple, and you're just going to have to take my word for it. Trust me, look at my face. Would this face lie to you? You see I've successfully eliminated the only opposition I might have had to form my own Galactic Empire. Please continue with the applause. So remember to vote Palpatine in the next election that will never happen, because I said so."

yeah all the characters are really dumb...It's frustrating that they don't see palpatine for what he really is, but the overall story is a good idea...just lucas seems to know nothing about human behavior and how people react to each other

Yes it was a good idea, but George Lucas should have had nothing to do with it except for maybe having some input in the outline and maybe the special effects. Someone like J.J. Abrams should have made them.

I think we agree totally...lucas fricked up what COULD HAVE been great...I mean the second and third films suffered from complete suckage and should have been done completely different, but with phantom it was great to see what it was like before the empire after years of imagining it. I like that the events seem to only have effects in a small setting, but eventually have universal effects...phantom suffers from many of the same things the others do, but unlike the others, there are some really cool.
the prequels suck, but I can't let phantom go...I like it, and at the same time it frustrates me to no end

There's a reason the first two are so great, and they have to do with Lucas having little to no creative control over either film.
Gary Kurtz (producer) quit the franchise after ESB because of differences in the storytelling with Lucas.

Its a fact that the prequels suck. Seriously who will argue with this? I mean sure Episode III is ok I guess, but the first two are abominations.

Godfather Part 3 was simply ok. It wasn't stellar but it wasn't horrible. Its competently directed, competently written, but its not the masterpiece the first two were. The Star Wars prequels are terrible in almost every regard, aside from maybe Palpatine himself and the special effects, which Lucas solely but his soul into. The characters are hollow, the plot makes no sense, everyone is a complete retard, the cinematography was terrible, piss poor dialogue, and its terribly directed.
All people who think these films are remotely competent and especially good need to see Plinkett's reviews on Youtube. Just type in "Phantom Menace Review" and you'll find it.

i would like to see qui gonn as the first protagonist, then obi wan in the second and third...with anakin being a big supporting character for the first film and a half and then the ultimate bad guy in the 3rd...frick these films sucked, but the phantom menace is not even close to the shite that was attack of the clones

The thing that pissed me off the most about the prequels was how big of a pussy Anakin was.
For years, we were under the impression than Anakin was the type of superjedi that eventually went to the dark side.
Yet, he's constantly getting the crap kicked out of him in the prequels. If anything, Lucas should have made him damn near invincible until he started to turn.
And the reason he turned to the dark side was gay.

first film he should have already been a fricking beast jedi, second film he should have been a beast jedi and at the end fall to the dark side...NOT TO SAVE frickING PADME. Then he should have been a villian throughout the 3rd film
I hate how the prequels focus on anakin, which is why i probably like the first episode of the prequels the best.
I feel like jorge should have taken more care, but since i never really liked jedi outside of luke going apeshit in the throne room, I guess i should have expected it.
frick...it is time to let go...these movies fricking suck and star wars is ruined.

Personally I agree with Plinkett that Qui Gon and Obi Wan should have been combined to form a single character, but the films should have had one apparent protagonist no matter what. Obi Wan being forced into training Anakin and them just bitching back and forth with each other I can't fathom what Lucas was thinking. Obi Wan should have been the first to believe in Anakin and always be supportive of him. Instead he talks bad about him when he is a kid to his face and constantly criticizes him when he is his apprentice. I don't think he says one kind word to Anakin once in Episodes I or II, nor vice versa. If I were Obi Wan, I wouldn't look back on Anakin with any longing for the good old days, and would likely be uncomfortable talking about him and regret not killing him when I had the chance.
And yes I agree that Attack of the Clones was much worse than Phantom Menace.

That's not what I'm talking about. There are numerous times in this thread that you state your opinion as if it were fact. Heck, it occurs in every thread that you post in.

My only point is that Lucas thinks that people like Star Wars for 2 reasons: Lightsabers and the special effects. He works so hard on these sequences, but writes the script in like one draft and doesn't think through the logic of his own universe or common sense. Almost every single shot has a special effect and lightsabers are used to the point of impracticability. Yoda using a lightsaber is impracticable because he's only a foot and a half tall which puts him at a considerable disadvantage when physically dueling a 6 foot tall human. The thing that makes Star Wars great is the soul, excitement, and characters. The special effects and lightsabers are just pluses from here.
