I disagree. I think your suggestion implies god is myth. Pi was a serious man of faith. Pi was not secular he was religious. He was converted to a deeper faith by his supernatural experience. His story requires faith in order to believe, as does belief in God. That is the thesis of the movie.

No offense, but you missed the entire point of the movie.

Richard Parker represented the beast inside Pi that allowed him to survive. It left at the end because he didn't need it anymore.

It's so obvious, I can't believe this thread is this long debating this...proof that most literature, metaphors and symbolism escape most people.

Yes, as in the larger God metaphor escaping most in here.

I don't think so. A Hindu finds Christ through Islam sets the context as theological. The entire movie is a boy's journey to find God. Pi found God, but evidently you haven't. That is okay because in order to find God you have to believe or have faith in the supernatural. The supernatural is not necessarily impossible but out of the ordinary. The island is a perfect example of this. It is not impossible that such an island could exist, plants are capable of being carnivorous. Also under the divine providence of a creator anything is possible. It is so incredible the way Pi found God that he grew up a Hindu and experimented with Islam only to convert to Catholicism. Pi memorized the entire numerical sequence of the value Pi, which is equally incredible but not impossible. If you question the larger God metaphor you basically doubt his entire story. He probably didn't really write out Pi, and so on. Enjoy your version of the truth. I prefer the better story.
