Thoughts on Hamnet

For most of the movie, I thought it was boring if well acted and overly mellow dramatic.
The events are sad. But I have some experience with infectious diseases and that’s not how sick people die. Overall felt there was too much screaming. I’m not going to fault the mother for being sad. But I will say we are in an era where people would have 8-10 kids and hope that 2-3 of them survived to adult hood. Her reaction seems over the top for the time this was set.
However, that last scene blew me away and was worth sitting through all the rest of it. It was so good and emotional and I got a little teary eyed. Also surprisingly good soundtrack

I mean...the kid's name was Hamnet and the play Shakespeare premiered two or three years after his death was called Hamlet. The spelling of Hamnet and Hamlet was interchangeable in those days. The fact that he wrote a play with the first name of his recently deceased child tells me that, at the very least, HE experienced some sort of grief over his loss.

The film takes awhile to get going, but the payoff at the end is worth the ride along with Buckley’s well deserved Oscar winning performance.
I chopped onions while watching it so I can’t speak to whether or not it’s tearjerker.

Sounds a lot like how I felt after watching It Comes At Night.
Elvis' granddaughter should have won an Oscar just based on her character's last scene alone. That scream haunted me for a long time.

I know they felt grief. I am not denying that in the least. They were probably very sad. But it was extremely extremely common for the time and a part of daily life. The death scene just felt so over the top. The boy screaming felt very unrealistic. And the mother being bewildered screaming felt too modern.
