Theory about Clemenza's death prior to GF2

It widely know that the actor, Richard Castellano didn't appear in GF2 due to an unsettling pay dispute.
When Cicci says: "There was no heart attack", then Frank Pentangeli makes a gesture that looks to me like he's shooting heroin in arm, thus suggesting that Clemenza died of an overdose.
I've always interpreted this as FF Coppola attempting to shame Castellano directly by smearing his character as some junkie...because of their spat.

ehh, maybe but I don't see anyone of Clemenza's stature, at least in that time period doing drugs. I think he was referring to poison. I think the second and third books came after, and the third not even being written by Puzo (I'd have to double check). But in the second book they go into it some where they think he was poisoned at his restaurant where he holds Court but that it was never confirmed. But then again the second book is wayyyy diff from the movie and deals more nationally (the Cuba and Meyer Lanksky character Hyman Roth are in it but its a small part and more set on a different story with an underling). But all theories are welcome when it come to the GF.

Frankie was pointing to the black band on his arm that represents mourning. It had nothing to do with heroin.
Frankie later does the real heroin symbolism when he talks about the Rizotto Brothers selling "junk".
I always assumed Clemenza was assassinated by the Rizottos or some other rival gang under Roth's control and it was made to look like a heart attack.

Yeh that is what I think they were trying to infer, that some thought it was a heart attack and some thought it was a hit because the "Boss" characters are larger than life and as such with people like that, there are always people who are going to question how they died (conspiracy, etc.).
Ruby, excellent catch on the "selling junk" part I completely forgot about that part. Such a great movie, I really want to sit down and watch the Epic version soon.
