Stephen King fans I know...hated the movie. Because of how much it deviates from the book and that Jack was wrong for the role.

*spoiler*

Because Jack looked like he was going to go crazy from the beginning. I remember a friend telling me somebody like Jon Voight should have played that role instead..

Anyway. It really comes down to Kubrick vs. King. And in this instance the movie was better than the book. Kubrick made the changes but he made it that much better.

Thoughts?

Nope. The book is much better. You can see him slowly being driven mad by the Hotel whereas the movie he just seems like an a-hole with an axe.

The TV remake should have been tossed on a midden heap.

I like the Kubrick movie, but just found the book to be much better.

Apparently King thought this too - as probably most authors would. Which is why he endorsed that crappy TV movie-version.

Obviously Kubrick had his own idea of what type of movie he wanted to make. Sometimes just following the source material isn't what artists do.

I like them both...difference being the Shining is probably King's best work while the movie isn't close to being Kubrick's IMO.

I thought IT was much better than The Shining fwiw.

The book was great and definitely shows a more gradual progression into madness. I really liked the movie though. Kubrick and Nicholson made the madness apparent from the get go, but I really like the film and watch a few times a year. Kubrick is one of the few directors IMO that can make big changes from source material and still come out with a film that 85% of viewers/readers will enjoy. Just my 2 cents.

Imagine.

IT was awesome. Too long winded like The Stand. Seems he could have shaved a couple hundred pages off of both. They were both great. IT was the first book I ever had to put down. The kids slowly drowning in the standpipe bothered me.

The Shining was awesome. Nicholson was/is awesome, but did overplay it a tad. Crazy too early. Scenes with Lloyd were great.

If you're talking about the books, I agree.

If you're talking about the movies....

For OP, the book was better (isn't it always?), but the movie was still good. An actual high quality horror film, which is a rarity.

Kubrick really made a Kubrick film based on a Stephen King book, not a direct make of a Stephen King book. That's a slight difference.

The movie is wonderful for what it is.

The book is a different beast, and is just as awesome.

I think IT is one of the few good movies that I want to be remade. I just think a remake would be great.

Well rejoice sir, a theatrical remake is in the works. LINK

It's a lot to cram into a theatrical release, but I'm optimistic

I've never heard anyone say that a movie was better than the book. Probably because they want everyone to know that they read the book.

because it's true.

I think Fight Club is better than the book...though it's debatable.

One book that definitely isn't better than the movie IMO...Princess Bride.

I am a Stephen King fan and I can say that his version of The Shining is better.

I didn't like how king made the hedges come to life in the book. By then it was so bad it was funny.

The one thing the book had on the movie though is the binder with the history and background of the hotel. I wanted to know more about that.

IT is King's best book.

Not really, the film actually layered the ideas better imo.

The miniseries with the guy from Wings followed the book better than the movie did.

That said, I do like the movie better.

I like both because they a so different, I don't bother to think of them as the same.
