So yeah The Dark Tower sucked big donkey balls. The filmmakers forgot the face of their fathers. But I have to admit, the Gunslinger's Creed scene was absolutely phenomenal.

I know it's strange to say just a scene is phenomenal, but this is the one part that seemed to capture the essence of the books. And I love the part where his father's voice echoes in "Not while the tower still stands, not while you still stand." I don't know why but that whole part just has that epic quality that reminds of the ending to Fellowship of the Ring.

So what does the rest of the board have to say about this scene?

Also: "Not while Allstate still stands. Are you in good hands?"

Spoilers?

Nah they fricked up the script from the get go. Making Jake the center point of the movie was dumb as hell. Should've just based it on the Gunslinger. Would've been great.

What? The issue was a disaster of a script that incoherently tried to cram 7 books into a 90 minute film.

Adapting a single book into a movie is hard. Adapting 7 into a movie, I don't know what they were thinking.

They should have either had a home run script ready for all 7 or limited the movie to one book. You could make a good movie from just the Gunslinger and go from there if there's demand.

There were already two red flags for this movie way before Idris Elba signed on:

1. Sony Pictures
2. Based on screenplay by that hack Akiva Goldsmith

To answer the original question, it was the strongest and most true to the book part. It's why I think Elba was fine as Roland. He could have pulled that aspect of the character off.

It gets dragged down by the rest of the movie. It should mean something, but it doesn't have the impact it should bc Roland is a side character and as a result it's just something he says, not what defines the essence of the movie.

Centering the movie on Jake is one of many frustrating WTF choices. You've got Elba and McConaghey, and you deemphasize them to play up the kid's story arc?

As someone who knew nothing about the books the biggest issue to me was the world building. It was too short and needed another 30 minutes or so to explain how it all tied together and build on the world and character backstories.

We could build a time machine and find vintage Clint Eastwood and place him in this movie and it would still be just as terrible. It was 100% the script that was the problem.
