Hint #7:
The Beatles song When I'm 64 was played during opening and closing credits.

If anyone didn't get the clues (spoilers, of course):
Introspective writer grapples with life's meaning, but by the time he discovers it, he has lost his voice [Garp was mute for a while toward the end of the movie]
Hint #1: His mother is the more accomplished writer, and eventually his wife bites off more than she can chew. [wife had an affair and bit off her lover's member when Garp and his son accidentally rear-ended them during the act]
Hint #2: Main character's father died (one would assume) happy [father was Army man in coma who had a convenient erection. Mom wanted child, but not husband, so... she helped herself. I'm sure he didn't mind, considering
]
Hint #3: As a result of his mother's choices, his son experiences something very tough on the eye. [in the aforementioned accident, son was thrown forward and his eye gouged out by stickshift with loose knob]
Hint #5: One character in the book/movie was a transsexual football player (don't say it!) [I believe John Lithgow won a supporting actor Oscar for this role, but not sure]

What's been going here?? Nicely done.
I am not at all familiar with this movie. It sounds made up.
