And since I read this entire month-long, 140+ page thread over 2 days, I'm unsure of hint timing, so just lemmee know...

I know this one. It's either the sandlot or Abraham Lincoln vampire hunter.

Hint #1: His mother is the more accomplished writer, and eventually his wife bites off more than she can chew.

No on all of the above. (and sorry for the delay, I slept in...)

Hint #3:

As a result of his mother's choices, his son experiences something very tough on the eye.

Please note clue #1 correction. I misremembered the story...my bad. Not sure it makes much of a difference, but to recap:

Synopsis:

Introspective writer grapples with life's meaning, but by the time he discovers it, he has lost his voice

Hint #1: His mother is the more accomplished writer, and eventually his wife bites off more than she can chew.

Hint #2: Main character's father died (one would assume) happy

Hint #3: As a result of his mother's choices, his son experiences something very tough on the eye.

And since I screwed up, I'll throw out a bonus hint

Hint #4: Like his father in law, he was a wrestler
