A group of seven close terminally ill young adults resides in the Rotterdam Home hospice run by an enigmatic doctor. They meet at midnight every night to tell each other scary stories. One night they make a pact that the first one to succumb to their disease is responsible for communicating with the others from beyond the grave. After one of them dies, bizarre occurrences begin.

Thats what my first reaction was as well but Hill House and Bly Manor were both excellent so I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt.

And next year he’s doing Poe like how he handled Bly Manor.

I read the Christopher Pike book as a kid. I’m excited for it.

On Episode 6 right now. Liking it so far. Anyone have any non-spoilery thoughts?

On episode 5. I like it quite a bit.

But… even with terminal cancer, the black female main character is still a Mary Sue. Peak 2022.

She is. She should have definitely been given more weakness. My biggest problem so far is how healthy and vibrant all these kids with terminal disease in hospice are. They’re basically all Mary Sues.

She arrived at the house knowing more about it and its history than anyone there. I do think her weakness is naïveté and self confidence, because she doesn’t recognize what is going on with the house and the woman in the woods. I don’t know if this is true yet, but I immediately assumed the woman in the woods is “Julia” who was healed. It seemed too obvious, but the lead never thought of it.

Also, I suspect that the kids aren’t actually healed, but are possessed by the original cult every generation to carry on living. They choose kids who are dying anyway.

So far it’s about as good as a teeny bopper horror show could be I suppose, but certainly not as good as Hill House. I am really hopeful for House of Usher next year.

Midnight Mass was very good.

Flanagan is a master at establishing great characters who have to deal with a horror situation. Brilliant writer. He’s just very good at what he does. I’m excited for this even though I normally wouldn’t be for something like this. It also just didn’t sound appealing to me at first glance.

It’s based on a YA novel from the early 90s.

The outside is different, but is it the same set inside as Hill House? Some of the rooms and hallways look very similar.
