Such a weird movie. I hated it first time I saw it. Hated that there was a very loose plot if any at all. Revisiting I find an interesting weird bizarre character study. Joaquin Phoenix and Phillip Seymour Hoffman were excellent. But I’m curious what other people think the movie is about? I still can’t figure out what PTA is trying to say

its about Cult of Personality and how easily vulnerable people can be influenced. And scientology

Definitely a weird movie but PSH vs Joaquin… bringing out the best in each other.. it really doesn’t get much better from an acting perspective

Eh, partly but let me ask, who’s the Master? Is it Dodd or Quell?

Great movie. Unbelievable PSH performance. In the upper echelon of PTA movies for me

I get that but…Joaquin kinda knows it’s bullshite the whole time right? I was never convinced he was bought into Scientology like everyone else. He seemed to really like the company and structure it gave him, but as soon as Jesse Plemmons confirms to him what he already knows he never buys into the cult again.

Correct, Quell knows it’s BS but he’s interested in how it works which is a prominent feature of Quell. Dodd is “The Master”, he’s called Master, he has a cult, education, fame and status. At the same time he’s shackled by his second marriage, scrutiny, pressure to keep producing materials for the cult and the authorities he keeps dodging. Freddy Quell is nobody, he’s a war vet and a drifter whose utility allows him to move through the world unseen and free. He has no attachment other than a childhood crush. So who is the actual “Master” in the story, the free man or the man whose status is built on a house of cards? Dodd admires Quell not the other way around. To Quell Dodd is just another interesting adventure in his life.

That’s probably the best explanation I’ve seen for this movie
