quote:Ok, we can go with that... they don't bring swords into the inn because it's uncivilized.
Maybe they they forget them with the ponies?
At that point, you can have Aragorn toss them some beater blades, and they swap out at some point. Merry and Pippin at least, maybe after Boromir trains them up. He and Aragorn look at what they have tucked in their packs, and say "hey, these are nicer. Use them instead".

Into the Old Forest --- > Old Man Willow ---> Tom Bombadil ---> The Barrow Downs ---> Bree and the Prancing Pony.
The Hobbits lose the ponies ( and most of their gear) when the Nazgul attack, thanks to the swarthy evil humans who try to sabotage their escape.
So they'd have to go fetch the swords after meeting Strider but not secure anything else.
Maybe after drawing a stool and a lamp, Strider could ask them if they have any proper weapons, and the Hobbits then decide that maybe the ancient blades would suit them better at their side.
Remember, Sting is with Bilbo, but the other blades that Merry ( specifically) and Pippin have are of ancient Numenorian make, specifically made with enchantments to fight the evil of the Witch King, from ages before.
