I agree with you but there is a very simple solution to this problem - have the show take place in the future after the last Star Trek film. I can't think of anything the show gains by being a prequel except the weak connection to Sarek.

They could still have Klingons if they are dead set on that. Maybe the Federation isn't at peace with them any more? Maybe a radical sect of Klingon isolationists have gained power, etc? Perhaps it's nostalgia culture taking hold in our entertainment but I'm growing tired of "prequel" stories. Just continue the timeline into the future.

You're not wrong. My guess is that the creators saw that the post-Kirk eras have been mined pretty deeply with ST-TNG, ST-DS9, and ST-V. The post-Enterprise era has been untouched.

I'll never know if it's awesome or not unless it comes on NetFlix.

Orville is the best Sci-Fi on TV in a really long time.
