I understand that it what it said in the pre roll of TFA but at that point he was the last Jedi. There was no one else we (or he) knew of.
Luke says explicitly in the duel with Ren that he will not be the last Jedi, and then it cuts to Rey. So either Rey is the last Jedi or she will lead a new group. She had saved the Jedi texts so she can learn and teach the next generation.

Well, time will tell if Luke really was the last one, but the phrase "the last Jedi" has been used to describe Luke since the 80's. I didn't think there was any question who the title of this film was referring to. Luke was the last of the Mohicans.

Skywalker was the last jedi, until rey.
Rey will be a full blown jedi by the next film.
The kid at the end could come into play but was more to show the audience and reinforce the idea that the force could be strong in anyone. Just like rey. Who was no one.

The kid will play a big role in the next movie. Time will pass and his ring will be his way into the inner circle and have access to Rey who will ultimately train him in the ways of the force.
That is the only logical explanation of the whole casino planet thing. The rest of that whole track it did not serve the plot at all, other than to provide social commentary.

I like the idea except none of the movies have been mapped out. I do agree the next movie takes place at least a year down the road.
