I went in blind to a screening with the director and writer a few months ago. I was very impressed and thought it was the best of the International Feature nominees at the Oscars. It’s streaming on Hulu for anybody interested in watching it.

ETA: I recommend going in blind. There are scenes in the trailer that reveal some big moments that I didn’t expect. The premise is below:

quote:

A father and son search for a missing daughter/sister at desert raves in Morocco, getting drawn into a primal, dangerous world.

Wow- what an experience. That was some amazing casting, directing, editing just all of it. What a talent. Just a film that really moved me. Unlike the drek that comes out of Hollywood

It really was. It was a packed house at a local independent theatre and you could hear a pin drop when after the credits rolled. Glad someone else checked it out. I think only had one bite in the thread I started when it first started streaming on Hulu. I can’t recommend it enough.

Probably the top 20 worst movies I've ever seen. What the hell did I just watch? Maybe the most strangest, depressing and boring combo of a movie ever.

The movie did a lot of things well, but writing wasn't one of them. Was this originally a book that the director took artistic liberties? i.e. was the screenplay adapted or original? Something was shoehorned.

The producers, actors, director, cinematography guys, etc, all did amazing work. The plot was just contrived to deliver the message that life isn't fair and does unexpected shite. In the effort to deliver that message there were too many loose ends. Ends that the writer contrived to build tension. Why was there war? The whole part about the missing daughter? These were just plot devices.

I wouldn't recommend this movie to anyone but the filmiest of film nerds. This was like an A24 movie without the big twist at the end.
