It added depth to the world buy making the fairy tale good guys a little more real, and by treating their own allies as disposable.
It was much more realistic IMO. Shows that this idealistic Rebellion actually gets dirty.

Worth it to see Vader hulk the frick out at the end. I mean shite they nailed that scene.
I thought the exchange between Vader and Krennic was a bit weak, but man did they nail it at the end. We've only really seen Vader in a duel or using the force to intimidate/kill people. They did a great job at showing the sheer terror of being confronted by a lightsaber wielding Sith Lord.
Another thing I really like about the movie were the costuming or the rebel alliance. They did a great job of giving people 70's haircuts and mustaches to have them blend in with characters from "A New Hope."

The Rebel Alliance fought out of desperation through much of the original trilogy.
I disagree.
The tone of IV is one of hope. I was listening to a podcast about the soundtrack and the musician on there talks in length about how Williams crafted the original soundtrack with lots of major keys and full notes to have that sound of hope in the background.
The tone of Rogue One is desperation. The soundtrack from Rogue One basically takes the melodies of IV and changes the keys and a few notes to sound more like desperation and eventually (at the end) bittersweet (mission successful but everyone dies.)
As far as strictly tone, I'd put one word answers as:
RO - Desperation
IV - Hope
V - Fear
VI - Triumph
VII - Rebirth
