Not really a rite of passage anymore. When I was a kid, very few parents took their kids to a rated R flick.
Now you can see tons of kids with their parents at the latest torture porn horror flick.
The first one I went to with a group of other kids was Weekend Pass. The movie came at the end of the Golden Age of teen sex comedies and it was worthless.
I remember one kid wouldn't go into the movie with us. He said he gave up sin for Lent so he went to see Ice Pirates. I think it was his 13th b-day party but we all went to see Weekend Pass and he went in alone to watch ice pirates at the Elmwood Theater. The ticket guy said he would let us have the tickets as long as the little guy didn't make a fuss.
These days most 9 year old kids have seen horse porn so R-rated movies aren't a big deal.

T2 was the first, but I remember Braveheart more vividly because I saw it at Broadmoor theatre and the projector burned up right when he was led out in the cart in the final scene.

Jaws, aged 7, I think I saw it at the Don Cinema on Bolton Ave in Alexandria.

wow, i don't have the slightest clue. watching an r-rated movie wasn't that big a deal to me so i really have no idea what it would've been. im sure the first one i saw was at 4 or 5.
ETA: I guess the most likely one would have been the warriors

Terminator 2. I set the bar high. Shortly after I watched my first porn coincidentally called The Sperminator followed by Cape Rear.

My Buddy, see below, came out around the same time Child's Play, if I recall correctly. What a terrible idea that was.

We had a Cabbage Patch Kids doll at my house, which my brother and I immediately draw and quartered after watching this. My mom was pretty pissed as it was a collectors item.

Nightmare on Elm Street. I was 4 and in daycare and the stupid daycare lady made me watch it. I had nightmares for several years afterwards

At the movies -> An Officer and a Gentleman at Bon Marche Mall in Baton Rouge. I think I was about 13 (1982). I snuck in with my CYO group!
We didn't have cable t.v. and no VCR/Betamax at our house until I was a junior in high school, so uncensored R rated movies were a rarity in my childhood.
I may have watched Blues Brothers at a friend's house on Betamax in 1981... don't remember the exact year.

The Exorcist (on VHS) when I was about 10 in '78.
I wasn't allowed to watch it, but my brother and I did when Mom & Dad weren't home.
Scared the shite out of me.
I slept with one of those big white leather cover family Bibles under my t-shirt that night.

The first R movie that was in a theater was Porky's when I lived in Raleigh, NC. My friends mother took us and I was probably around 13 years old. The first R movie ever is hard to say. I remember in the sixth grade when we first got cable TV and HBO. Wow was that a highly anticipated movement. Watched plenty of R rated movies after my parents went to bed but can't remember what was first.
