I certainly liked the full circle of Tommy speaking with the new recruits.....just like it started but he's a much wiser man. I was expecting it to be a little more emotional. I'll admit I teared up a few episodes ago when Lou read Tommy's actual note.
I'll never forget the episode when Conner died. Has to be one of the most powerful episodes of TV I have ever seen.

I thought the finale was very well done. I thought it really fit the series, as many have posted. They could have had a really heavy ending with Lou's death and the 9/11 anniversary, but they kept with the theme of the show. The show never lost its sense of humor even in the bad times.
In the end, it was about the bond bewtween brothers. Even through all the fights, misery, and death they still loved to bust balls. When you deal with life and death on a daily basis, you have to laugh in the face of death. Rescue Me did that. It was a great show that I think never got its due.

I teared up in the first few minutes thinking the other five guys died. Then, realizing it was Tommy's dream, I was like "Damn...sucks about Lou."
Hated seeing Franco as the next lieutenant.

No shite. That was a ball breaker.
That one, and the one where Tommy was trying to bring that little girl back to life on the sidewalk and the other guys were trying to pull him off of her.. and he went at them with the fricking axe, and then went back to working on her.
Then the kid started breathing again.
And Tommy just lit up a cigarette and gave all of them a big "frick You" look.

One of my favorite shows of all time. Liked the finale, but kept waiting for something big to shake things up.
The previews showed Janet collapsing against a wall in tears, so I kept waiting for the big emotional scenes. Everybody was so calm after Lou died, so I started to think maybe the opening scene wasn't a dream after all. It wasn't until Tommy's speech to the recruits that I was like, "Damn...that's how it ends."
Not a complaint as I thought everything was completely fitting. Read an article describing the whole mood. These guys face death of close ones so much, they move past grief pretty quickly and choose to remember the good times.
And Lou showing up at the end? Tommy's still really fricked up..but at least he now has his family, friends and life to lean on instead of the bottle.
I could definitely see this show having an FX movie 5 years from now just to touch base with these guys. Never have I watched a show that could literally have my bawling one minute then blasting a snot bubble all over my shirt laughing in the next scene.

There was another one shortly after Connor died where there was a car accident or something with a dead kid. None of the other guys could do anything, but Tommy just stepped up and wrapped the kid up.
It certainly had some pwerful moments. I'll miss it eventhough it hasn't been as good the last few seasons.
Another great sequence of events

I now can't decide if Tommy is crazy or if he really is seeing ghosts.

Does anyone remember the webisode when the "creature" was roaming the firehouse and they were all scared shitless looking for it?

That scene was very similar to the incident at the BR airport years ago.
Great series, loved it from start to finish. Didn't concern themselves with political correctness, but let the world see how a close knit group of men act.

Not living up to "The Shield."
I just finished the finale last night and completely agree. I was expecting Tommy to be completely torn down similar to Vic. I expected him to either die or end up in a wheel chair. I feel kinda robbed that a show based on so much tragedy didn't have much in the finale (I know Lou's death was tragic but not on the level I was expecting).
