This CAN be done, IMO. I don't even think it would take much CGI outside of the metaverse environment. Just good actors/actresses and good use of the source material.
But for RP1, I never thought that Spielberg would keep the 80's theme and references for a "blockbuster" releasing in 2018. He'll use the bones (Oasis, Evil corp, young protag and friends, fate of Oasis at stake) but replace the details. I just can't imagine D&D references, a Joust competition, etc.. getting onto the big screen.
BUT, if they eliminate the Monty Python scene, I may boycott.

Ultraman, I guess, it looks like none of the Japanese franchises made it in.

Looks to be at least one, there is a Gundam from Mobile Suit Gundam in the trailer you must of missed. It's the actual one Aech picks in the book.

Wouldn't look too far for this one. The entire copper key portion will probably be just the race. You can see it's for the Copper Key in the banner in the stands in the trailer.

I really wish they would, but yeah, they don't make it for the geek fans of the book that made it popular in the first place. They make it for the wider dumbed down audience to sell more tickets.

Watching on a cracked phone screen the Gundam would be where the spider web is.
That makes me happy.
Tomb of Horrors is something that you don't need to be a pen and paper player to get.
Hell the book cuts out all the traps and most the encounters.

They should have a trailer that is a commercial for the Oasis and then a trailer that is the entirety of JDH's announcement of the hunt (Funeral scene and all).
That way the audience pretty much goes in knowing what the Oasis is and the main catalyst for the story.

I am aware, I think people are complaining because it appears to be earlier in the film according to the trailer. I’m gonna go see it regardless but I am way less excited for it than I was when it was announced that it was getting made

Yeah, that shitty tent hangout doesn't have the same vibe as Og's Rivendell like Mansion's Maze.
I got a feeling Art3y is going to be vastly different than the girl we get in the book. Surprised they didn't get rid of the birthmark.
