First, great movie! I loved it. I grew up near the Hannibal, MO area around all things Mark Twain and Mississippi River. I love a great river epic.

My question is what did Neckbone's uncle see while he was on the bottom of the river? Did he see Mud'd body floating above?

Did Mud die? I ask because I can't figure out if the ending really happened or if that was Mud's version of Heaven.

I guess he saw him, and possibly rescued him.

I never thought they explained the uncle very well.

He sees the boys on the island, but never actually confronts them about it. Just asks if they need to tell him anything.

Then they have the scene at the end.

Did he help Mud too?

How did Mud get to the island in the first place?

I watched that part twice and couldn't tell if Mud's body was floating by, if he was swimming...I couldn't tell for certain from Neckbone's uncle saw.

I usually don't like sad endings - but I was sure this one was going to have one and in some ways probably would have made this movie better (it was already good). You knew someone was going to bit by a snake - I expected Mud to die trying to save Ellis.

Me too, especially when Neck asked Mud if he had been bit and Mud was like, "Oh shite, I better check myself."

But I guess that would have been predictable.

how is it even possibly unclear Terry's Uncle saw Mud.

paraphrased:

"Sometimes when you're in the river you find things. And you have to decide if things are worth being pulled out, or better off being left in the river".

apologies. saw this movie three months ago. in france. and it still was easily evident.

Hes definitely saw him floating. You could see in his shirt the frayed hole from the shotgun wound.

I'm not sure if he was teh one who saved him or if it was Tom.

You'll recall that early in the movie Mud survived like 2 hours after a snake bite that should have killed him in 20 minutes as a child. I think that gives us the impression he might live 'past death' in the river.

At the very end whenever Mud is called "son" by the assassin...was that supposed to confuse the viewers around whether or not the assassin was his father? Got me for sure. The context and tone in which he delivered it was more compassionate to me than it was casual.

I think it was supposed to confirm that he was Mud's father after all.

I don't think so. They made it very clear throughout that he is not Mud's father. They did say he's the closest thing Mud ever had, and I think Tom saw himself that way.

I may be wrong, but Tom might have called Ellis 'son' at some point earlier. I literally just watched this movie yesterday.
